The Italian Wine Crypto Bank (IWCB) has announced the entry of the Brunello di Montalcino “Ciliegio” from Fattoria La Magia. The Cherry has characteristics of great longevity both for the 2015 vintage and for the 2016 vintage, both supplied to the IWCB.
It is a wine that is produced in just over 1000 bottles a year from Sangiovese Grosso grapes grown in the south-east area of Montalcino on soils rich in stones.
The 2015 vintage was characterized by an excellent quality of Tuscan grapes in general. The moderate temperatures allowed a slow ripening of the grapes which were harvested in the first week of September. Maceration continued for 40 days, in order to favor the extraction of polyphenols and aromatic compounds, and the wine is then aged in French oak tonneaux for 36 months.
In the glass, the wine has a deep garnet red with ruby reflections, therefore it has great vitality despite the long aging in tonneaux. The nose has aromas of ripe black fruit, such as cherries and plums, combined with tertiary hints of skin and dry leaves, but with very fresh mentholated aromas that balance the olfactory bouquet.
The sip is balanced, with a very fine tannic texture that contrasts with the soft texture of the wine, favored by the high alcohol content.
The 2015 “Ciliegio” by Fattoria La Magia is an excellent example of Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, it can easily be kept in the cellar for about twenty years, favoring the development of its more elegant tertiary aromas.
The 2016 vintage of the ‘Cherry’ has very similar characteristics to 2015, but was characterized by a warmer summer season with less rain, leading to a slight anticipation of the harvest period.
The grapes were harvested during the last week of September, reaching an alcohol content of 14.5%. The 2016 vintage was also subjected to a 40-day maceration and a 36-month maturation in French oak tonneaux.
The wine has a garnet red color, with pronounced ruby reflections.
The olfactory bouquet moves on notes of ripe fruit and plum jam, as well as aromas of sweet spices such as vanilla, nutmeg and cinnamon. The tertiary scents of dry leaves, flint and skin complete the olfactory spectrum.
The sip is balanced, with well-integrated round tannins and an acidity that enhances the fruity scents.
Fattoria La Magia’s 2016 “Ciliegio” is an elegant Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, with great aging potential, thanks to which it will be able to express even better the elegant tertiary and sweet spice aromas.
